Comparative law notes

Portugal

The term "advogado" is broader than "barrister", as it refers to any person who is qualified to practice law. In Brazil, there is no differentiation between lawyers who are allowed to plead for clients in the lower courts or the higher courts. A barrister in Brazil would be called "advogado" (attorney; lawyer), "advogado processualista" or "advogado de contencioso" (litigator).

Definitions of barrister

English

(UK & COMMONWEALTH) a lawyer that is allowed to plead for a client in the lower and higher courts (NB a solicitor is only allowed to plead for a client in the lower courts, although it is far more common for a barrister to plead and for a solicitor to instruct the barrister)
