doubt

noun

Comparative law notes

Brazil

The word "doubt" is narrower in meaning than its Portuguese counterpart "dúvida". While "dúvida" is used in Portuguese to refer to any type or nature of a question (e.g., a question raised in a classroom, a question about what career to choose, etc.), the word "doubt" should only be used in English when one wants to call into question the truth of something, to show lack of confidence in something. For instance, if you say you have a doubt about a contract, then you are not certain that the contract was lawfully drafted.
