Definitions of inquisitorial system

English

a legal system in which the judge has a key role in investigating parts of a case, collecting evidence, and examining and asking witnesses questions. Inquisitorial systems are especially associated with civil law jurisdictions, and contrast with the adversarial system in place in common law jurisdictions.

Because France has an inquisitorial system, a judge will investigate the case before it goes to court.
