The term "pensão alimentícia" (or "alimentos") is broader in meaning than "alimony". While "pensão alimentícia" refers broadly to the money paid by a person who has the legal obligation to contribute to the financial support of someone else (e.g., child, ex-spouse, parent) , "alimony" refers exclusively to the money paid to an ex-spouse.
