Definitions of mischief rule
a rule of statutory interpretation according to which a judge attempts to determine the legislature's intention behind a particular piece of legislation. It is used when the literal rule and golden rule do not apply.
The classic statement of the mischief rule was given by the House of Lords in Heydon's Case.
