Definitions of split custody
a court decision in a child custody case, where the children are split up so that one parent gets legal custody (= the legal right or duty to care for a child after its parents have separated) of one or more children and the other parent gets legal custody of the other children
For the purposes of calculating a child support obligation where split custody exists, a separate family unit exists for each parent.
