Definitions of letters of administration
a formal document given by a court allowing someone to deal with the estate of someone who has died without leaving a will. Letters of administration may also be issued where the person appointed under a will to deal with an estate is unable to act.
An administrator has to apply for letters of administration before they can deal with an estate.
