employee savings plans

Comparative law notes

Germany

An employee savings plan (ESP) is a pooled investment account provided by an employer that allows employees to set aside a portion of their pre-tax wages for retirement savings or other long-term goals such as paying for college tuition or purchasing a home. Employers sometimes match their employees' contributions up to a certain amount. In the US the most popular ESP is the 401(k) retirement plan. Since the German word phrase relates to the compensation benefits themselves and not the plan, another suggested looser translation may be "contributions to an employee savings plan".
