Comparative law notes
When the context suggests that Urteil is meant to convey the court's opinion in support of its ruling, as part of its judgment, the better English translation would be "decision" or "court decision". This will arise when a court judgment is cited as authority to support a proposition in a German legal brief or law journal article. The word "judgment" is a better translation choice when Urteil is meant to denote the entire package of the court's formal action, (e.g., the order, the grounds supporting the decision and the ruling on the costs).
