a legal representative in certain jurisdictions (Scotland and the Netherlands) who is appointed by a court to represent, during legal proceedings, the best interests of a persons who lack the mental capacity to make decisions for themselves. A curator may be appointed for a child or for a person who is mentally or physically incapacitated. Under English common law, an analogous concept is that of the guardian ad litem.
