These are damages for non-monetary losses suffered by a plaintiff. Unlike special damages (see below), these damages are called "general" because they cannot be assessed exactly. General damages have traditionally been characterized as those that the law presumes to flow from every breach of contract or other invasion of the plaintiff's rights.

money damages paid as compensation for pain and suffering, disability or reduction in quality of life resulting from a civil wrong. General damages are awarded for those losses that are difficult to calculate or quantify (eg pain or suffering as opposed to damage to personal property).
