This phrase is more of an American term, but the concept of paid vacation in the US does not totally match the concept in Germany since few US states mandate a minimum vacation time for private sector employees. In other words, US workers are not legally entitled to any paid holiday at all and must negotiate these terms with their employers. However, in reality, most US employers will offer their workers paid holiday time. Most US workers typically receive at least 10 days holiday a year.
