joinder proceedings

Comparative law notes

Germany

The phrase "adhesion proceedings" is often used as a translation. The better English word is "joinder" since the mechanism used in these situations is akin to a "joinder" (which refers to bringing several legal claims against the same party together), inasmuch as the aggrieved party/victim is essentially joining a civil claim to a criminal proceeding in the broader interest of judicial efficiency. See "action civile".
