Definitions of deponent
a person who states something in a deposition (=a formal statement given by a witness out of court), or in written statement to later be used in court
In such situations, if the deponent does not attend the court proceeding, the affidavit (=written statement made outside of court that someone swears is true) cannot be used without the court allowing it as evidence
