Comparative law notes
In China, the concept is a "deprivation of political rights" (剥夺政治权利), a punishment that can be imposed on its own, or with a separate principal penalty (e.g. capital punishment or life sentence). Political rights are not automatically deprived for convicted persons. The High Court in Hong Kong has ruled in 2008 that it is against the law to remove prisoners' right to vote, so Hong Kong has no concept of "civil disability".
