the right of a defendant to refuse to provide an answer when questioned by police, following arrest, or in court, especially during criminal proceedings. In most jurisdictions, this right also includes the provision that no inferences (=guesses based on an opinion you have formed) can be made by a judge or jury because a defendant exercised his or her right to silence.
