Comparative law notes
In Hong Kong, "assessors" (裁判委員) who are specially qualified may be called to civil proceedings to assist the court. However it is not usual practice for this to happen Confusingly, jurors in China are called "People's Assessors" (人民陪审员). People's assessors can only participate in cases of the first instance, but they can be criminal, civil, or administrative cases. A panel of people's assessors and the judge will preside.
