This German term is often mistranslated as "capital gains tax". Capital gains tax is too narrow a translation since that concept under US tax law refers only to the gains or losses realized on the sale of a property or investment and not to dividend income or yield. "Kapitalertragsteuer" refers to both forms of investment income.
