Whereas a "writ of mandamus" refers to the order issued by court in a writ of mandamus proceeding, "mandado de segurança" usually refers to the action or petition filed with court. Therefore, "petition for a writ of mandamus" or "action for a writ of mandamus" are usually better translations.
