Comparative law notes

Brazil

The term "codicilo" in Portuguese (sections 1,881 to 1,885 of the Brazilian Civil Code) is not equivalent to "codicil" in English. "Codicilo" is a written document, dated and signed, stating how a person wants their funeral to be and what should be done with their assets of low value (e.g., clothing, furniture) after they die. As there is no equivalent in common law jurisdictions, we recommend using a neologism and adding an explanatory note.
