Comparative law notes
Pursuant to the Brazilian Statute of the Child and Adolescent (Law No. 8,069/1990), "acolhimento institucional" is an exceptional measure whereby a child is placed under the care of an institution for a limited period of time. Every three months, an assessment is conducted to determine whether the child can return to his/her own family or should be placed in a so-called "substitute family" (e.g., adoptive parents).
