This phrase is often as an almost literal translation when "Erscheinener" appears in a notarial deed context; when a person is appearing before an Austrian civil law notary who is officiating and/or recording a formal deed. Since this English phrase is rather awkward and is typically be used repeatedly in a notarial deed, we recommend using the easier but just as accurate translation, "attendee".
